What Is Asian Handicap Betting?
Asian Handicap betting is almost the same as any other handicap in sport. It essentially gives another team a head start.
Unlike standard handicap betting however, an Asian Handicap eliminates the draw by giving teams head starts of 0.5 goals.
This means it's impossible to back a draw as ultimately no side can score half a goal. Not yet anyway!
Why people bet on this is because you'll essentially see better odds on the bigger teams. So if you were to take a game between Manchester City and Cardiff for example, the odds would be stacked hugely in the former's favour. By giving Cardiff a head start however, it'll start to swing the odds and give punters better value on a home win.
You can back an Asian Handicap for any number really, with the higher head start given to one side seeing better value for punters, as it makes it more difficult for sides to come from a virtual deficit.
Asian Handicaps are offered predominantly in decimal form such as 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.00 and so on, whilst some countries know them as fractions as in 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1 and so on.
Example:
Let's take a game between Liverpool and West Ham United. The match result odds would fall heavily in the home side's favour, looking something a little like this:
Liverpool - 2/9
Draw - 11/2
West Ham - 12/1
Here, there's little value in betting on Liverpool, so some punters would start to consider an Asian handicap. With an Asian Handicap, you'd essentially be giving West Ham a set number of goals head start, so the odds would look a little more like this:
Liverpool (-1.5) - 4/5
West Ham (+1.5) - 11/10
Liverpool (-2.5) - 5/4
West Ham (+2.5) - 4/6
As you can see, the higher the handicap (the number in brackets), the more the odds swing into the oppositions favour, potentially allowing for a tidy profit.
Below you'll find further examples from the Asian Handicap market, as well as the best bookmakers to bet on one.
